Laphroaig The 1815 Cask Legacy Edition Cask Collection
Laphroaig The 1815 Cask Legacy is an extraordinary release, created by the current Laphroaig Distillery Manager, John Campbell, to honour the blenders who worked at the distillery before him. It is named after the year the workers first entered the Laphroaig distillery and brings together skills and techniques passed down through the generations.
The whisky was initially matured in tan oak ex-bourbon casks. After a period of time, it was decanted for further maturation in large, new European oak casks, which have never been used in Laphroaig before. These casks were slowly matured, resulting in a very deep whisky.
Nose: Whiffs of Laphroaig’s signature peat smoke with burnt apricot and raisins.
Taste: Broad and soft oak, rich caramelised dark fruit and a lively dried fruitiness.
Finish: Long, lingering nuts, peat and oiled wood.
Sometimes referred to as the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies, Laphroaig is one of the most iconic island distilleries. With its smoky and iodine flavours, Laphroaig embodies the Islay identity.
Although the exact etymology isn’t known, Laphroaig is said to mean “broad hollow by the bay” in Gaelic. This references its location, a small basin on Islay’s southern coast. However, it officially operated under the business name of D. Johnston & Co throughout most of its history after Donald and Alexander Johnston, who in 1815 founded their distillery on the island’s south coast.
One of Scotland’s most character filled Malts, Laphroaig is known for its signature Seaweed-led, pungent, earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, as well as the sweet nuttiness of the barley and the delicate heathery perfume of Islay’s streams. Have it with sticky pork ribs or dark chocolate to compliment a dessert. Best enjoyed by itself or over ice, it’s perfect for a late nightcap, pouring it neat or on the rocks to bring out it’s subtle yet rich flavours. It is as unique as the island itself.
